A third of Hong Kong youths reject Chinese nationality

November 12, 2012

A survey conducted last month by the Chinese University of Hong Kong shows the lowest rate of identifying with "Chinese nationality" among 819 Hong Kong respondents. Also, 33% the respondents born after year 1980 say that they are "Hong Kongers, not Chinese".

The survey also reveals the lowest rate of Hongkongers' identifying with China's national flag and anthem (decreasing from 53% during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 to 37% today)

University professors attribute the decrease in Chinese identity among Hong Kong respondents to conflicts and disputes between China and Hong Kong in recent years.
